Let’s Talk About Postnatal Depression

It is cold and wintry, and some of us experience the blues at this time of year. That is not unusual. Some new mothers, however, experience postnatal depression and do not seek help. What are the signs, why do we not talk about it more, and what can you do?
Food and mental wellbeing
Dr Kaz interviewed Joyce Bergsma about where food comes from and how it can be used to support mental wellbeing. Joyce Bergsma is a registered nutritional therapist who has practised orthomolecular and functional medicine since 2010. Joyce is currently developing the Happiness Hub, a place where people can connect and learn about improving their mental wellbeing. She also offers individual consultations and runs private-group workshops on stress management and fermented foods.
Do not gloss over the problem
Bergsma explains: ‘Why talk about postpartum depression? In recent years, I have had friends and clients who experienced this illness and were completely shocked. They felt unprepared, and it seemed as though the medical system they encountered simply overlooked the problem. I feel that many people in the field do not want to frighten people. But is it not much more frightening to find yourself in the middle of it and feel completely alone?’
